Quitting & Scorpion Slaying

We start off this episode with an exciting podcast announcement…

On July 9, we will be airing our very first episode of The Girl Next Door Book Club! We thought it’d be fun to dedicate an occasional episode entirely to discussing books we’ve read recently, and we want you to join us!

For our first GND Book Club we’ll be dishing on Delancey, by Molly Wizenberg and Wild, by Cheryl Strayed. So grab them on your kindle, borrow copies from a friend, or put in a request at your library and read up. We’ll be sharing questions and comments from listeners on the show so as you read, let us know what you think! It’ll be like one big virtual book club meeting, complete with cocktails.

In this episode, we’re talking about quitting jobs and making big career changes while sipping this tasty summer sangria…

Quick White Wine Sangria
adapted from Oprah.com
makes 2 servings

approximately 2 cups of chopped fruit such as peaches, strawberries, lemon and orange slices
~2 c. of white wine (dry to semidry), such as a Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay
~1/2 c. sparkling water

Chop fruit and divide between two glasses. Pour 1 cup of white whine into each glass. Allow to sit, covered, in the refrigerator for 2 or more hours. When ready to serve top each glass with approximately 1/4 cup of sparkling water.

*For our mocktail version, we used a sparkling white grape juice.

Kelsey shares her four ways to know if it’s time to quit your job, and Erica talks about what it’s been like for her to totally change career gears. We both share our awkward work stories, and our favorite and least favorite things about our current work situations.

We also admit to annoying habits that we’re trying to quit.

Kelsey’s currently obsessed with hipster ipsum and other offbeat lorem ipsum texts, and Erica couldn’t be more pleased with her Moving Comfort Juno sports bra.

In neighborhood news, Erica saves another neighbor from a nasty creature, and wants to institute neighbor night swims this summer. Ghost of Tailless and his friends are brazenly using Kelsey’s yard as a highway, and the rogue neighborhood trash can is driving her crazy.

Thanks so much for listening! Don’t forget to subscribe on iTunes to catch all the latest episodes and leave a review there if you love the show.

  1. I am #205 in line for Wild at my library. Womp womp. I’ve been meaning to shell out for Delancey, though!
Can’t remember which podcast you talked about bathing suits that hit at the largest part of the thigh, but here’s some evidence that the style can actually make all kinds of curves look all kinds of awesome: http://www.pinterest.com/closetcasefiles/the-bombshell-swimsuit-made-by-you/
Final thing: I laugh every time Erica says “that’s not cute.” Fantastic catchphrase.

  2. My family recently suffered a pretty traumatic loss and I’ve struggled to find my way back to normal for a month now and when Erica was talking about going to save the neighbor while wearing a sports bra, and had to clarify that she also had a shirt on because it wasn’t that big of a scorpion emergency I laughed and laughed and felt like myself again. : ) Thank you girls!

  3. Andee, I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m so glad that we could bring you a smile and laughter. We will hope that there will never be a scorpion emergency so dire that there isn’t time to grab a shirt ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Oh man, maybe the wait will go fast! Or maybe you will find a sweet friend who bought it and wants to lend it…I try so hard to not buy books so I feel your pain! I’m loving those suits!

  5. Spring for Delancey and join us! Both are worth the buy in my book, but you know how I feel about buying books. #feedtheauthors.
Thanks for the photo evidence! I think if you go with that vintage/bombshell look, it can definitely work. Flaunt what ya got, right?
Ha! I didn’t realize I said “that’s not cute” that often, but it is a pretty great catchphrase, now that you mention it ๐Ÿ™‚
Thanks so much for listening, and we’re so glad you’re liking the show!

  6. Oh Andee! I too am so sorry for your loss, and can’t even tell you how glad I am to have made you laugh and feel a bit back to normal. That makes my day, and I’m so glad we can be a bright spot in yours. Thanks for sharing!

  7. I am SO excited for the book club…and I also try to never buy books so I hope I make it through the library wait lists quickly! Thanks for another fun episode! The burning question: Did the rogue trash bin belong to the Ladds? ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Yeah! Glad you’ll be joining us Lindsey! No the trash can was not ours (phew), and it’s still on the corner. Thanks for listening!

  9. I love the podcast a lot. My cousin has a similar podcast with her friend, but their 1000 miles apart!
I too work in environmental consulting, but luckily I’ve found a company that’s not one of major, national ones….less pressure, I think.
And I can’t wait until Fall when I can actually try some of these cocktails!

  10. Thank you, Misti! I’m so glad to hear you have a job you enjoy in consulting! The work really can be interesting and it is such important work. Our cocktail archive will be waiting for you! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  12. Yay, I’m so glad the conversation resonated with you and that you’ll read along with us, let us know what you think about the books! It took me a while to get back to reading after Dashiell was born but it was wonderful to find that time again when I did.

  13. Just listening to your job quitting chat as I wash the dishes… here’s a song I love on the topic, with lots of banjo for Erica! And I just ordered Delancey. ๐Ÿ™‚ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iguSjgDuV1c

  21. I just have to tell you how many times I have listened to this podcast. I keep firing it up and reflecting on my job situation. Actually, I think partly encouraged by this episode I did change jobs recently, but there must still be something there because just again today I turned it on again to hear your thoughts and bask in your successes and imagine my own different future. I remember listening to it for the first time in the garage as I prepared my husband’s Father’s Day gift, on maternity leave, filled with anxiety, and feeling like you made this episode just for me. I just wanted to thank you for your candor and honesty. Both of your stories have been helpful and especially Erica’s since I am also in education. We’ll see what kind of a comment I have to make by next June! Carry on with your always fun, real, wonderful podcast! ๐Ÿ™‚
