Book Release & Political Signs

This week we’re celebrating the release of Erica’s book, Candid Classroom: What Parents Want to Know and Teachers Want to Tell Them (!), while enjoying a grapefruit beer mimosa. The mocktail version is made with non-alcoholic beer!

Grapefruit Beer Mimosa
from Aida Mollenkamp

Into each glass filled with ice, pour 1/2 a bottle of wheat beer (Erica had Blue Moon, Kelsey had a nondescript non-alcoholic beer), 2 ounces of fresh grapefruit juice and 1/2 ounce of simple syrup. Stir and garnish with a wedge of grapefruit. Cheers!

Erica gives us some behind-the-scenes details about finishing up Candid Classroom and we talk about what readers can expect from the book (spoiler alert: a funny, personable read with real-life tips for parents on navigating school and establishing great parent-teacher relationships).

We’re also talking about taking on big dreams and what’s next on the horizon for both of us.

In obsession news, Erica is rocking some big eyelashes thanks to Younique Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes and Kelsey has a backlog of obsessions that include the Hawaiian barbecue chips from Trader Joe’s, her evening face wash routine and Schmidt’s natural deodorant (it really works!)

Around the neighborhood, Saw Guy has made some major landscaping changes, mostly for the better; political signs are going up everywhere but not always having the desired effect; the u-turns are getting a little out of hand; and we daydream about the ideal new businesses for the shopping center near our neighborhood.

  1. Love when a new episode pops up in Stitcher. In case you were wonder, you all are in the same playlist as the Art of Simple Podcast and Joy the Baker!
Schmidt’s deodorant is in my Amazon cart as we speak. Thanks for the tip. And I’ll be sure to check out the chips on my next TJ run.
It’s fun to get to eavesdrop with your permission!

As soon as I saw the title for this episode I thought, “I hope they mention that weird Obama sign”. My favorite detail has to be those strangely Photoshopped arms, which I’m not even sure are his own arms.
I also loved the reminder to celebrate. I am a big fan of crossing items off a to-do list and when it’s a big project with multiple steps (ex. my master’s thesis), I tend to get overwhelmed and see it only as a “blur” as Erica mentioned. Lately I’ve been giving myself permission to find joy in all its different components, especially the parts that are for the moment in fragmented pieces. I think this can really help one to feel rightfully proud even while the end product is temporarily incomplete. Thanks for talking about how important this is and for another great episode!
