Sleep & Pillow Talk

This week's episode is all about sleep, which as parents of young children calls for a cocktail…

Pineapple Coconut Champagne

(makes 2 cocktails)

  • 1 8 oz. can pineapple juice
  • 2 oz. cream of coconut
  • Champagne
  • Mix the pineapple juice and cream of coconut in a cocktail shaker. Pour over ice and top with champagne.

We chat about our ideal sleep life and more realistically what sleep actually looks like for us currently. We chat about both our sleep habits, as well as those of our husbands, how we deal with lack of sleep, and how we get good sleep while away from home or traveling.

Kelsey loves her side sleeper pillow and loves to fall asleep to certain podcasts (Sleep With Me, or audiobooks, like A Short History of Private Life ). Erica loves her cervical support pillow and free white noise app.

In obsessions, Kelsey is eating dinner by candlelight (she loves the Trader Joe's tapered candles) these days with vintage candlesticks (similar to these) and Erica has joined the Hydro Flask club and can't get enough of her Green Bay Packers!

  1. all right… please share what the random salad dressing is for in the picture. I’m guessing it was not a cocktail ingredient? 😉
Anyhow, I cracked up at your discussion on sleeping positions. I used to sleep exclusively on my stomach when I was a kid, and now as an adult I use a similar position to Erica when I am having trouble falling asleep on my side. Had no idea this was a thing. Ha!

  2. Another great, and funny, episode!
I am so surprised to hear about wearing pajamas to bed – I’m the hot sleeper and just can’t imagine wearing that many clothes in bed. I go with a tank top and underwear (yes, in michigan, and yes, even in the winter).
I used to be a “coffin sleeper” when I was single. Now I alternate between back and side sleeping. I always worry about increasing eye wrinkles by sleeping on my side, so I try not to sleep that way.
We had some warmer weather this week, and I was able to walk outside without freezing my face off – thanks for keeping me company along the way. 🙂

  3. Haha, we forgot to mention it on the episode! Chris accidentally bought salad dressing with bacon it in (we’re vegetarian) so I had it out on the table to give to Erica. Def NOT a cocktail ingredient. How funny that you have a “falling asleep” position…maybe I have to try this!

  4. Oh my gosh, that sounds so cold just thinking about it – people’s temps really do seem to run different! Oh no! Eye wrinkles from side sleeping…is that why people say to get a silk pillow case…must investigate 🙂 Thanks for taking us on your walk!

  5. You should try ASMR. It’s a bit different (and not for everyone) but there are so many different videos with ASMR that are great to fall asleep to. And especially to take a nap. 🙂 I listen to a video when I want a nap at work, that was great during my pregnancy.
There are a lot of different kinds of ASMR, for example soft spoken, tapping, massage roll plays, brushing and a lot of others. ASMRrequests is a favorite but here’s a link to a good explanation by another “asmrtist”:
I’ve had insomnia my entire life. It takes forever to fall asleep (but at least I sleep well once I’m sleeping) and these videos really help. If I simply can’t fall asleep I watch a “hypnotic” sleep video (a lot of stare-into-my-eyes stuff, which means I can’t keep them open, lol) or a relaxation video (where they go through the body, toes feet legs and so on).
And ASMR is a bit like having white noise. 🙂 Thank you for another great podcast episode!!!

  6. Oh, interesting! Thanks for this suggestion! Sleep is everything, so important to figure out how to get it – in whatever ways work best for you! This is so intriguing, had not heard of this before!

Loving this episode! I need more and better quality sleep in my life so I appreciate the inspiration. Thanks for the laughs too, I love envisioning someone sleeping like the police chalk outline on the sidewalk!
Erica commented that she sleeps on cotton sheets only and she is anti-microfiber. But these brushed microfiber sheets (100% polyester) are super soft, and don’t feel hot at all. Definitely not scratchy and have held up well to many washings. I’ve even bought a second set! And the price is right, around $30/set. Makes me feel like a princess every time I get in bed.

  9. Haha – Kathy: recommended of socklets – how you changed my life! Those sheets sound so wonderful…I think we could use some new ones at our house this year. I hope that better sleep is in your near future!
